Waiting for the Light

A distant honeycombed tower of Leslie Gulch tuff (consolidated volcanic ash) glows under late afternoon light. This area was carved out after the eruptions of the Mahogany Mountain caldera and the Three Fingers caldera over 15 million years ago. The rhyolite ash was deposited up to 1000 ft thick and is now seen as colorfully sculpted formations. To gain a higher angled view, I hiked up to this spot from the valley bottom. The afternoon light gave the landscape a particularly special glow. Forever Wild

A big view up the main stem of the Owyhee from our ridgetop camp. On this evening scattered sunlight flowed through the canyon, mirroring the play of clouds and low angled sunlight to the west. Radiating out from the eastern horizon were faint anticrepuscular rays, a meteorological phenomenon that is similar to crepuscular rays but seen opposite the sun.
