Beginning Anew

For a few weeks each spring the landscape surrounding the Painted Hills of Central Oregon comes to life with an amazing display of wildflowers. Until the spring of 2010 I had always missed the peak bloom. I was pretty excited this time around when I realized my timing was about right. After camping out a little ways away I arrived at this spot early the next morning. My first few shots were with my 8 x 10 view camera. As morning light began to make its way over the landscape I saw this photo opportunity developing. I was unable to set my 8 x 10 up in time so I grabbed my 35mm and rendered this image just as this distant hill came to life with sunlight. I've made numerous visits to the John Day Fossil Beds in central Oregon, but this was my first time venturing up nearby Sutton Mountain. It forms the eastern backdrop of the popular Painted Hills area. I made this image after an evening run up its 4700' summit. As I was scrambling back down, this rainbow appeared across the canyon.
