My earliest influences in photography made their images using sheet film and large format view cameras. From pioneers such as Ansel Adams, Elliot Porter and Brad Washburn to more recent masters such as Jack Dykinga, Michael Fatali and many others, they all inspired me to pursue landscape photography. My first camera was a 35mm - and that is mostly what I learned on - but for years I wanted to give larger film a try. In 2009 I finally pulled the trigger and invested in a lightweight Gowland 8 x 10 and a couple of lenses. Due to all the work and expense that goes into a single shot, the learning curve was a long one, but also extremely rewarding. The digital medium is incredible and I'm continually amazed with all the creative controls it affords (it makes up 90 percent of my work these days), but there is nothing quite like slowing down and carefully composing an image through an 8 x 10 inch piece of ground glass from underneath my darkcloth. It's an experience and a wonderful process that I hope will remain a part of my photography for years to come.
