The weather on the eastern slope of Steens Mountain is always full of unexpected surprises. This amazing sunbow began to form one afternoon while I was on top of Mickey Butte. In creating this photo I used a technique that I'd only used a few times before. I knew this was the perfect scene for it due to the brightness of the sun relative to the rest of the landscape. Using a dark card to block out the sky, I made one exposure for the land; for the next exposure I removed the dark card and exposed for the sky. This was all done in camera on the same frame of film. The result almost gives the scene a moon-lit feel. This technique can be a little tricky, but when done right it can give very unique results.
