Circumhorizontal Arc
This atmospheric phenomenon appeared during a climb up Washington's, Mount Adams. The horizontal looking rainbow is actually an ice halo, formed by hexagonal, plate shaped ice crystals in high level cirrus clouds. The halo is so large that the lower portion of the arc appears level with the horizon. It was in the sky the majority of the afternoon, but the most vibrant colors appeared earlier in the day when I made this telephoto image, Cascade Mountains, Washington
