I brought in 2013 by spending 2 nights camped high on Three Fingered Jack. While hiking back down through an area of forest burned back in '03 I stopped to photograph the scorched tree shadows being projected across the rolling, sunlit snow. The Temple, Leslie Gulch, Southeast Oregon, Winter 2013

A distant honeycombed tower of Leslie Gulch Tuff (consolidated volcanic ash) glows under late afternoon light. This area was carved out after the eruptions of the Mahogany Mountain caldera and the Three Fingers caldera over 15 million years ago. The rhyolite ash was deposited up to 1000 ft thick and is now seen as colorfully sculpted formations. To gain a higher angled view I hiked up to this spot from the valley bottom. The afternoon light gave the landscape a particularly special glow.

Napali Coastline, Kauai, Hawaii, Summer 2012

I made this image after hiking out to the end a knife edged ridge along the rugged Napali coastline. The intermittent cloud shadows provided depth and separation to the endless lines of rugged cliffs.

Western Red Cedar in fog, Forest Park, Portland, Oregon, 2011

When fog settles into the forest an amazing transformation happens. Through the enveloping mist, trees begin to display their own personality. Their forms, no longer blending into the complexities of the forest, become a study of outline and texture. I had walked and ran past this scene probably 50 times, not once seeing the slightest potential for a photograph. While on a walk one particularly foggy morning the curved branches of this Western Red Ceder really caught my eye. For the first time I truly saw this tree. Using my medium telephoto to further isolate and compress the scene I juxtaposed the twisting ceder with the contrasting verticals of trees directly behind.

Cottonwood and Godbeams, East Steens, Basin and Range, Oregon, 2011

I stopped and photographed this lone cottonwood for over an hour during a particularly blustery day on the eastern slope of Steens Mountain. Shafts of light began to punch through the darkening sky as storm clouds pushed over the 9000' summit of Steens Mountain. From a distance they appeared to dance across the landscape.

Steens Mountain Sunbow, East Steens, Basin and Range, Oregon, 2010

The weather on the eastern slope of Steens Mountain is always full of unexpected surprises. This amazing sunbow began to form one afternoon while I was on top of Mickey Butte. In creating this photo I employed a technique that I've used only a few times before. I knew this was the perfect scene for it due to the brightness of the sun relative to the rest of the landscape. Using a dark card to block out the sky I made one exposure for the land. For the next exposure I removed the dark card and exposed for the sky. This was all done in camera on the same frame of film. The result almost gives the scene a moon-lit feel. This technique can be a little tricky, but when done right it can give very unique results.
