Trail Running : Camera technology has come a long way over the years. The high image quality one can get from a small, lightweight camera has been a dream come true for me. As an alternative to making landscapes with my large format film camera, I've begun taking a lightweight digital camera with me on trail running adventures. I was first inspired by this participatory approach to nature photography by the late Galen Rowell. He was all about being a part of the action being photographed. Many of his best images involved a "wilderness activity rarely associated photography." This can have a tremendous impact on the originality and quality of ones photographs. I was a dedicated runner before I even picked up a camera. It was my greatest passion. Once I became interested in photography it became this back and forth game where I'd commit myself to photography and not run much or vice versa. I've been running more over the past few years, even competing in an ultramarathon or two. The only difference is now I pack a small micro four thirds digital camera with me. Few things in life give me as much joy as running a remote mountain trail and being able to create new images in the process.

The Holga Landscape : This brand new gallery features my landscape work using a Holga toy camera. I started using this camera in 2009 as something to experiment with and it has gradually evolved into a tool that I almost always have with me. When shooting with an all plastic camera and fixed meniscus lens, the resulting images take on a soft, vignetted, almost surreal look. Using this camera has allowed me to take a step back from how I usually see, beyond critical lens sharpness and resolution. For me, the Holga landscape is all about embracing and finding ways to work with the limitations of the camera.
